As the July 3rd end date loomed nearer, many employers have been struggling with how to handle employees that are on a deemed emergency leave was set to expire. That expiry date has now been extended to September 25, 2021.
This will provide employers with the opportunity to further assess operational requirements through out the summer.
Although this extension does provide for more time to develop new operating levels and give greater thought to next steps for employees, it should not be taken as an opportunity to put off decisions.
The decision on how and if to return an employee to work where their original position may no longer be required is a difficult one that needs to be assessed thoroughly, This means that business leaders should not be waiting until September if they have a clear picture of the future of the company now.
